HVAC System FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

If You’ve Got Questions. We’ve Got Answers!

HVAC is an acronym that is short for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It’s sometimes referred to as an air handling system and affects interior air quality as well as climate control. An HVAC system often includes ductwork, air filters, and humidification controls.

As your HVAC system is the primary method of air circulation in your home or commercial building, it’s important to ensure that the airflow is unrestricted and maintaining a high quality. Both indoor and outdoor units require regular maintenance to ensure that the air filters continue to effectively remove dust and debris, and that heat exchangers and coils are not restricted.

The date the equipment was manufactured will be located on a label on one of the outer surfaces. Most warranties are 5 years, but may also be based on the specific model of the equipment. If you’re not sure, bring in the model and serial number and our staff may be able to help you verify the warranty status of your heating and cooling system through our suppliers.

We recommend maintenance in the spring before the summer cooling season, and in the fall, prior to the winter heating season. Regular maintenance can help you avoid serious breakdowns in the seasons you rely on them most. By replacing the filters regularly you can ensure that your heating and cooling system is operating at top efficiency, and preventing dust, allergens, and germs from polluting the indoor air quality.

HVAC units operate at different sound levels, depending on their age, design, and where they are installed. Most product reviews include a sound rating because quiet operation is considered a desired feature. Quieter HVAC units often include insulated compressors as a way to reduce operating noise.

The most important thing to consider in buying an air conditioning unit isn’t size but efficiency and performance. Bigger systems are not always better in terms of efficiency or performance. Smaller systems have to work harder if the space is too large, reducing their efficiency and leading to break down. Pacific Heating and Cooling staff will make recommendations for the best size of air conditioner depending on your space and airflow pattern.

There absolutely are! We’ve already mentioned the importance of regularly scheduled maintenance, but you can also dress your windows for the weather. Installing products like shades and shutters, screens and drapes can reduce the amount of extreme sunlight and keep room temperatures moderate. Lastly, keeping the blower settings at “open” to provide consistent air filtration and movement throughout your home or office building.

Yes, as odours are most often caused by bacteria, dust mites, mold, and animal dander, removing these airborne particles through an HVAC’s powerful filtration system does help to reduce odour. Improper ventilation can cause moisture to build up and promote mold growth, and an HVAC system ensures that air is evenly circulated. UV lights can also be installed to work with your HVAC system to inhibit the growth of contaminants and sterilize HVAC surfaces.

Every person is different and reacts differently to pollutants in the air. A scented candle may produce a very pleasant aroma to one person and an annoying throat or eye irritant to another. Everyone’s irritant threshold is different and can change from season to season. Those with a high threshold for odours may be quite satisfied with the results attainable with a simple air filtering system. Those with lower thresholds may require an air purification system to not just filter the air, but break down vapours and odours so that they can’t recirculate. We can provide products for both, to ensure that the air you breathe is healthy.
